Dearest Mother
I am happy to report that I am, against all odds, still alive. As I was passing out from a rather distressing level of blood loss, I found rescue at the hands (or not, rather) of a most unlikely being. Though I admit I was not in any state to be terribly attentive at the time, I am quite certain my saviour was a giant serpent. And not just any serpent, either, but a serpent sporting the most dazzling coat of blue feathers I have ever laid eyes on. The creature laid me on its back and, I believe (though I might have imagined this last part, given my state at the time) flew me to safety. The city where I was deposited by the creature is a quite friendly place, and the natives are quite civil to me, though I understand not a word of what they’re saying. It is certainly no Spanish they are speaking, that much is for sure. However, though the language barrier is a bit of a problem, there is no mistranslating base human kindness, and the locals have provided me with food, clothes, a place to stay, even writing supplies, once I managed to get my needs across. One of them even agreed to deliver this letter once it is complete, and if my luck holds he will know where to take it to get it properly delivered. The local leader, a portly, lightly dressed gentleman with a great fondness for gold jewellery, has invited me to attend some sort of ceremony this evening. I did not quite understand what exactly this ceremony would be about, but I am certainly excited to see it. Sgd. Your recovering Son, Joseph Edwards
