Dearest Mother
It turns out, to my great dismay, that base human kindness can indeed be mistranslated. Do you remember the ceremony I mentioned in my last report? Well, it turned out to my shock that said ceremony was some form of ritual sacrifice, and that I was supposed to be the main attraction of the evening. Upon finding this, I threw myself off the side of the tower atop which the sacrifice was meant to take place in sheer desperation, and found to my pleasant surprise that there was a lake just behind it, letting me land with no more damage than a broken wrist and a light concussion. After making a hasty escape from the angry locals, I started making my way through the unfamiliar rainforest. After a series of misadventures too numerous and tiresome to recount here, I finally made it to civilization, or as close to it as one can get on this god-forsaken continent. From there I have managed to make my way to a port town and have just now purchased passage back to jolly old England. Once I get back, I intend to give Mr. Burke at the office a very stern talking to, and leave a strongly worded recommendation to cease all planned expansion of mining operations in this wilderness. God willing, I should be home in less than a month, although knowing my luck the ship will probably be blown off course and crash into the lost island of the man-eating tigerbears or some such nonsense. Sgd. Your exasperated Son, Joseph Edwards
